We asked students at the Law School a series of questions about what it’s really like to live and study at NYU. Here’s how they answered:
What’s your favorite “off-the-beaten-path” spot in NYC?
I love the boardwalk at Coney Island, especially in early spring or late fall when it’s not too crowded. You can walk past the old amusement park, visit the aquarium and then go out for Russian food in Brighton Beach.
Astoria is great! There is a Czech beer garden there called the Bohemian Hall and lots of Greek restaurants and shops.
The Staten Island Ferry is great because you get a wonderful view of the New York Harbor, the Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island. Plus you’re on the set of my favorite Madonna video, "Papa Don’t Preach."
Wogies Bar and Grill on Greenwich Avenue, a small restaurant and bar with authentic Philly cheesesteaks. As a native Philadelphian, I think it’s a fun place to watch a Phillies or an Eagles game!
The Apple Store uptown on 5th Avenue is open 24 hours and is architecturally interesting, since it’s a giant glass cube with these cool pneumatic glass elevators. They offer free classes showing how to use multimedia computer programs like Final Cut, and occasionally host film directors for sneak peaks at their movies and a Q&A.
Baby Bo’s Cantina on the East Side.
Small’s, a jazz club in the West Village.
The New Malaysia Restaurant, hidden in an alley off of Elizabeth Street in Chinatown, is really good and extremely cheap. And the soup dumplings at Yeah Shang Hai Deluxe are better than those at the more crowded places in the neighborhood.
The Morgan Library on 36th Street and Madison. It’s a museum and research library that’s off the well-traveled New York museum circuit and always has interesting, slightly offbeat literary and musical exhibits: scraps of paper on which Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind,” original Jane Austen and Charles Dickens manuscripts, and a Gutenberg Bible, to name a few.
If you don’t mind a walk, and think your cardiovascular system can deal with a little punishment, Mama’s Food Shop in the East Village has what I consider to be the best fried chicken in the city. It’s maybe the best anywhere, and I’m from South Carolina.
Noodle Bar on Carmine Street… reeeealllly good!
I went skiing in New Jersey and was really surprised by the quality of the mountain and snow.
